NEW MEXICO CLIMATE ACTION PLAN

New Mexico is committed to tackling climate change and building a healthy, secure, and prosperous future for all. The State of New Mexico is developing a comprehensive strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while developing healthier communities, a thriving workforce, and diverse economic development opportunities. The New Mexico Climate Action Plan (CAP) will provide an actionable roadmap to meet New Mexico’s climate pollution reduction targets.  This initiative focuses on spurring action for meaningful change, and your input is vital to its success.

The New Mexico Environment Department was awarded a Climate Pollution Reduction Grant in July 2023 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to support statewide climate planning. This effort involves three key milestones:

Priority Climate Action Plan

The New Mexico Environment Department and the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department submitted New Mexico’s Priority Climate Action Plan to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on March 1, 2024. The Priority Climate Action Plan outlines key actions the state needs to take to cut greenhouse gas emissions, while providing air quality, health, workforce, and economic benefits to the state’s communities. The state agencies worked collaboratively to develop the Priority Climate Action Plan and built on extensive input collected from communities, workforce entities, and Pueblos, Tribes and Native Nations

Climate Change Task Force

The New Mexico Climate Change Task Force was created by Executive Order 2019-003 and chaired by the Secretaries of the New Mexico Environment Department and the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department.

During the spring of 2022, the Climate Change Task Force convened a Technical Advisory Group to advise on proposed climate actions to assess climate goals and implementing actions proposed by the Climate Change Task Force to help New Mexico meet its 2030 emissions reduction goal while strengthening its economy and integrating equity principles into its climate planning. The work of the Technical Advisory Group is available in the final report available here and continues to inform climate action planning.
